Overview

Not all telnet and terminal emulators are equal.  The Telnet protocol has many options that are not mandatory; terminal emulation protocols are sometimes poorly defined or filled with proprietary extensions.  This means you may have difficulty with certain clients.

Tested Clients

HyperTerminal

HyperTerminal is included with Windows (Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications).  The ANSI-BBS emulation works fine.  The history buffer (the old text after scrolling) may be corrected; however, this has no impact on the appearance of functionality of the active screen.  A HyperTerminal shortcut is included in the installation file.

Windows XP/2003 Telnet (TELNET.EXE)

This command-line client is included with Windows XP.  However, this client cannot initiate uploads or downloads and does not support AVATAR and other terminal protocols.  You may use HyperTerminal (bundled with Windows) if you need to transfer files or change advanced terminal options.  One advantage of this client is that you can see how the BBS looks from a classic DOS window.
